After 36 handball matches at the IHF Women’s World Championship in Arena Nord, it was time for match number 37 and the final of the President’s Cup. The fight for a title and a trophy was contested between two nations from opposite ends of the globe, Iceland and Congo.
The President’s Cup is over after a week filled with matches for the eight lowest-ranked teams from the preliminary group stage. The President’s Cup is a placement tournament in the IHF Women’s World Championship.
Greenland and Iran faced each other in the first match of the day in the President’s Cup. Both teams had something to play for as they were both aiming for their first victory in the tournament and to avoid finishing as the 32nd out of 32. For a moment, it seemed like Greenland would secure their first win, but it ended up being Iran. The match ended 23-28 in favor of Iran, who leaves the tournament with a victory, while Greenland returns home with tremendous support from their many Greenlandic fans.
In the battle for 30th and 29th place, Paraguay and Kazakhstan were set to face each other. Paraguay emerged as the better team, securing the 29th place, while Kazakhstan finishes in 30th place.
More exciting was it in match for 28th and 27th place, where Peoples Republic of China and Chile faced each other. Both teams were neck-and-neck for most of the match, but Chile ended up being the stronger team, winning the match 25-26.
The last match at Arena Nord, Frederikshavn, was a showdown between Iceland and Congo. These two teams were set to compete for the 26th and 25th place in the President’s Cup, and for the large and beautiful President’s Cup trophy.
The game remained tense throughout as both teams stayed closely matched. They took turns leading by one goal. The second half was nail-biting as the minutes on the clock approached 60, and the score remained tied.
In the final minutes of the match, Iceland managed to pull away from Congo, and the match ended with a score of 28-30 in favor of Iceland. The Icelandic women can now leave the 26th IHF Women’s World Championship with a 25th place finish, a beautiful trophy, and the title of President’s Cup 2023 winners.
